a/n: thank you jello for working on this with me!
“Weakness,” Adriel sneered, floating above the lake. The lake. The one place they felt free, running on water (Ava) and throwing stones (Bea), joining together at the end of a long day to watch the sunset, shoulder to shoulder, a million things unsaid, before heading in for the night. The dark nights, where all the affection would escape, sung through sleepy whispers and relaxed muscles. Their bodies would say what they could not in the day, plagued by their own thoughts of proper and improper, of responsibility and reliance. But each night, toes dipped in the water as the sun disappeared behind the horizon, was a masterpiece in itself. A safe space. The one space in the day where they could be them. Not the halo bearer and the sister warrior. Not the orphan and the diplomats’ daughter. Just them.
It was not a safe place now. Ava’s heart hammered in her chest, adrenaline seeping into her muscles. Adriel just laughed. Dark clouds rumbled above, mixing with the fiery undertones of the sky. It was just them, staring each other down. “Weakness,” he laughed again, with the brandish of a hand. An orange portal appeared at his fingertips, sucking through a struggling figure, trapped in his grasp by the collar.
“Bea!” Ava jolted forward, stopping immediately at the knife at Bea’s throat.
Beatrice stopped her struggling at once, locking eyes with Ava as her limbs sagged. Weights, pulling her to the Earth’s core. “Ava–” she breathed, eyes full of admiration, and devotion, and… regret.
“Love,” Adriel laughed again, disdain thick in his tone. “It is unbecoming of you.”
His fingers released, sending Beatrice plummeting straight into the water, a flash of panic in her eye.
No hesitation.
Ava dove in after her, thanking the countless hours she’d spent at the pool.
The water was dark and murky. Ava caught just a glimpse of the silver chains tugging Beatrice down, the halo accelerating to catch up.
Ava’s legs pumped as she hooked her arms under Bea’s, urging the halo to go faster. The weight was unsurmountable, barely moving an inch closer to the surface with each surge of the halo. It was starting to flicker, Ava’s lungs aching, legs turning to jello.
In the dim bursts of gold, Bea met her eyes, firmly shaking her head.
Go.
Leave me here.
Ava just shook her head back, wanting to scream. The need for air grew, pressing against the inside of her lungs.
IN THIS LIFE.
But Bea just begged, those wide doe eyes undoubtedly filled with tears, washed out by the expanse of water surrounding them.
Ava knew exactly what Beatrice was trying to say. Save yourself. The halo was getting weaker with each passing second. Pulsing fainter and fainter in Ava’s back as the argument went on. If the halo went out, they would both be dead. Beatrice would never allow that. Save yourself Ava. For me.
But Ava could not.
She gripped harder, reaching deep within herself. A warmth grew in her chest, energy flooding her legs as she propelled them to the surface.
Her head broke the surface, lungs immediately heaving in air. “Bea!” she gasped, overcome with glee. “We made it!”
Beatrice did not respond as Ava flipped them to float, limp in her grasp. “Bea?”
Her head just lolled, rolling against Ava’s chest.
“Bea!”
Yanking off the chains, Ava kicked through the water, dragging Bea onto the rocks as soon as she could.
She waited for a breath.
Nothing.
Felt for a pulse.
Nothing.
Immediately snapping into action, she tilted Bea’s head back, ignoring the bluish pallor tinging Bea’s skin.
A familiar British accent echoed in her ears from last week, back when they were still training. Pinch the nose shut. Make the seal. Breathe. Watch for the rise of the chest. She did so, heart stuttering. Good, Ava. Now compressions.
She crossed her hands, establishing a steady rhythm with each pump. Ava shoved down the panic crawling up her throat. When Beatrice had brought it up a week ago, she’d laughed. (“If you wanted to touch my chest, Bea, you could’ve just asked!” Bea just turned bright red, trying not to stammer.) She’d never thought that she’d ever need it, let alone on Bea.
Ava tried not to sob, watching the CPR force copious amounts of water from Bea’s lungs. Could a person even hold that much?
Bea’s ribs bowed with each compression, guilt twisting into Ava;s heart with each press. This was going to hurt.
That is, if she survives.
Ava forced the traitorous thought from her mind, focusing solely on giving breaths and compressions, murmured pleas for Beatrice to wake.
It takes forever, but the prayers are answered.
Bea coughs, and Ava stops, staring as Bea’s dark eyes finally open, finding each other right away.
Ava pulls her to sit, helping her expel some of the remaining water. Sliding in behind her, Ava lets Bea slouch against her front.
The sky has cleared, and all there is to do is call for help. She sends a pulse, hoping Lilith or Jillian will be able to track it. In the meantime, her focus turns back to Bea, boneless with exhaustion. A slight wheeze to each breath. Ava runs a soothing hand over Bea’s sopping hair, smoothing the flyaways.
Her breathing evens out eventually, and they are left staring there, once again, as the sun lowers, casting an array of oranges, pinks, and purples across the sky.
Ava’s almost sure Bea is asleep, drowsy from the relentless battles she’s endured just today, when a quiet voice mumbles. It’s strained, and wheezy, but sure. “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it,” Bea whispers, eyes sliding shut as she turns into Ava’s neck.
“Song of Solomon 8:7,” Ava whispers back, holding her closer as she rests her face into the back of Bea’s head. “Isn’t that a little on the nose?” she smiles, knowing that Bea will somehow feel it.
“As long as you know it’s true.” Bea takes a little pause, watching the last of the sun disappear.
“I love you.”
